Characterization of Dendritic Cell and Regulatory T Cell Functions against Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection.

In the study, NAC (5 mM, 10 mM, and 20 mM) and liposomal glutathione (5 μM, 10 μM, and 20 μM) – this is one thousand times less than NAC – treatments enhance the levels of glutathione in dendritic cell’s – cells from ‘normal’ individuals thereby improving the control of intracellular M. tb infection.
Our results indicate that GSH by its direct antimycobacterial activity inhibits the growth of intracellular M. tb inside DCs. GSH also increases the expressions of costimulatory molecules such as HLA-DR, CD80 and CD86 on the cell surface of DCs. Furthermore, GSH-enhanced DCs induced a higher level of T-cell proliferation.
